Secret to Weight Loss

“Shhh!” What is about to be revealed is a SECRET! The secret - weight loss equals calories consumed minus calories burned. Okay, not much of a secret, more like a simple equation that can be challenging to solve because it is multifactorial. However, you have come to the right place for tips to help motivate you to make that equation work for your personal goals. Mindset, nutrition, and exercise are key success factors in the equation.

Mindset

It is important to have a positive and focused mindset for achieving your weight loss goals. Make the goals realistic. You will not drop 20 lbs. in one week. A weight loss goal of 1-2 pounds per week is realistic and attainable. Sustainable weight loss happens with consistency over the course of time. One tip is to write your goal on paper, with the words “I can do it” and post it on your mirror. You can do it by being consistent and focused.

Nutrition

Did you know that abs are made in the kitchen? Weight loss is 80% nutrition (what you eat) and 20% exercise. Finding the right balance of protein, fats, and carbohydrates is another tip that can help you accomplish your goal. These are the primary macronutrients or “macros” that you should track for weight loss. I recommend meeting with a nutritionist to help determine your correct balance.

Exercise

It’s time to get active. A combination of cardio and strength or resistance training is highly recommended to promote weight loss. Find an activity you like doing. If you are just starting out, keep it simple. Walking is a heart healthy exercise that can be done around the office, home, or at a gym. A good daily walk goal is 10K steps per day. A fitness tracker such as an Apple watch, or a Fitbit are recommended to help you keep track of your steps and heart rate. Add a little strength/resistance to the walk by carrying 5 lb. dumbbells at a brisk pace (Tip: No dumbbells? Use 2 full water bottles, or 2 canned goods).
